The majority of the photographs focus on construction and land developments including Ocean Pines, Route 113, Ocean City, and area golf courses from 1987-2012 with the bulk of the photographs taken from 1999-2001. Many of the images were used for business and commercial use.

The Baker Family papers document the personal and professional activities of Harry F. Baker and Catherine “Kitty” Baker and their children, Harry Jr., and Vaughn who lived in Salisbury, Maryland. The materials date from 1914-2013, with the bulk of the material, conveyed through photographs, dating from 1944-1955. Visually, the photographic images document the daily activities of the Baker Family, seen through the lens of Harry F. Baker. Also included, is a scrapbook and an expense book focusing on Kitty Baker’s art, Vaughn Baker’s Wicomico High School diploma from 1961 and an autograph book from 1955, an oral history by Harry F. Baker, and other ephemera. In addition, is genealogy research of the Baker Family, including manuscripts, a draft, ledger notes, and research notes by Vaughn Baker.

Newspapers in this collection come from various locations on the Delmarva Peninsula including the Delaware coastal beaches, Sussex County, Ocean City (Md.), Salisbury, Pocomoke, and Longneck. Major newspapers in the collection are the Marylander and Herald, the Salisbury Daily Times, and the Salisbury Advertiser. The Chamberlin Family papers contains information on the Chamberlin family. Included are photographs of members of the Chamberlin family, the birth announcement of Terrence Graham who was adopted by Bill and Terry Graham, and postcards to L. Waters Milbourne who lived in Baltimore, Maryland. Additionally, this collection contains a travel scrapbook from "Ralph, Bud, and Jim's" travels across the United States, the scrapbook includes photographs of Ocean City, Maryland. There is also various ephemera from Washington College, and ephemera from Ralph, Bud, and Jim's experiences while abroad. Additionally, there is a press announcement regarding Alexander Gray Jones's election to the Board of Washington College, a 1964-1965 directory to school officials and teachers of Somerset County, an invitation to the dedication of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and a pamphlet discussing the dedication.

In a series of interviews of local Eastern Shore residents in 1992, Salisbury University students and teachers collected folk life material. For this project, Lindsey Meade chose to conduct a survey on Ocean City, Maryland, to learn more about the town and its folk group. In her paper, she briefly recounts the story of Ocean City since 1869 when its first structure was built. She also gathered the perspectives of others about the town by interviewing several people, residents and non-residents. [A reformatted copy of this document can be found under FK93.025]
Folklife Collection - Body Boarding in Ocean City

In 1994, Salisbury University student Fred Morgan collected folk material. His collection examines the folklore around body boarding in Ocean City, Md. In his paper, the student explains the rules by which body boarders must abide in the water such as to never steal someone else's wave. He also talks about the interactions between wave riders, the animosity shown by some older surfers (in Ocean City), and some of his encounters with "clean up sets".

His collection explores the patriarchal system he found himself benefiting from while working at Freddie's Pizza in Ocean City, Maryland. This involved the male workers being able to take a relatively laid back approach to their jobs and "hang out" while the female workers were not given this liberty. Included are Harris's essay, color photographs, a VHS of Freddie's Pizza (transcript included) , and an interview on cassette tape with several male Freddie's workers (transcript included).

The Jay Mason Photograph collection contains prints, negatives, contact sheets, and some slides taken by Mason between 1973 and 1978 primarily in Worcester County, Maryland. Mason's work appeared in the Tidewater Times and subjects of photographs included many waterways and watermen, people in portrait and working, historic buildings and structures, roads and roadsides, and landscape and nature scenes. While some prints include descriptions of the subjects, additional descriptions can be found in the mounted photographs.

Purnell and Winder families photographs

The photographs of the Purnell and Winder families document the lives of Oscar Moore Purnell, and his descendants, originally of Worcester County, Maryland. The materials were compiled by Richard Bayly Winder, III, the grandson of Oscar Purnell, and depict individuals from four generations of the family during the early 1900s to 1950. Many photographs feature the Oscar M. Purnell house in Snow Hill, Maryland, and the surrounding rural areas of Worcester County. There are also photographs of the Ocean City, Maryland beach and boardwalk during the first half of the 20th century, and a few personal records, and ephemera relating to various members of the Winder family.

The Records of the German Club and German Study Abroad Programs collection documents the history of the German Club at Salisbury University and two study abroad programs offered by the Modern Languages Department between 1980 and 2015. Included in the collection are flyers, photographs, scrapbooks, video recordings, press releases, administrative forms, notes and correspondence among other materials created by Salisbury University (previously Salisbury State College and Salisbury State University) students and the advisor of German Club, Klaudia Thompson. Two events, Oktoberfest and Immersion Weekend, are the main focus of the German Club records. In addition, there are programs, posters, itineraries, travel guides and brochures, advertisements for the program, and postcards from abroad that document a winter study abroad program and a summer study abroad program. There are additional materials related to the Modern Languages Department itself, mostly regarding German courses and events, that include correspondence and publications by or about the Department. Lastly, there is a large collection of photographs and scrapbooks documenting events held by the German Club and the study abroad trips.
Reports from the Ocean City Life-Saving Station

The collection offers a glimpse into the functionality of two United States Life-Saving Stations, one of the predecessors to the modern U.S. Coast Guard, on Maryland’s Atlantic coast. The collection includes the Keeper’s Reports from the Ocean City Life-Saving Station in Ocean City, Maryland and Wreck Reports from the North Beach Life-Saving Station on the Maryland portion of Assateague Island. The Keeper’s Reports offer a record of day to day duties in the early years of the Ocean City Station while the Wreck Reports document rescues and shipwrecks off Assateague Island in the early part of the twentieth century and the transition of the Life-Saving Service to the U.S. Coast Guard in 1915.

Salisbury Documentary Video Collection

Each of these men describe life in Wicomico in the early Twentieth Century and the changes that occurred in the area throughout their lives.

This collection contains personal memorabilia of Amanda Virginia Ayres Spencer Satterfield. Included are two scrapbooks relating to her high school experience at Ocean City (MD) High School from 1932 to 1939. In addition there is a ledger book from the Ambassador Apartments/Hotel from 1941 to 1944 which her father, Samuel Jacob Ayres owned and she later owned. The scrapbooks highlight her many activities, love interests and trips while at school. The ledger documents the guests who stayed at the hotel and the revenue accumulated during that period.
William Heaton Papers

This collection contains items and documents from the musical career of William Heaton Whitworth, more commonly known as William Heaton, spanning circa 1900-2006 (with the bulk from 1920-1950). William Heaton was born in England in 1891 and moved to Massachusetts in 1909. He traveled the country performing with various theatre groups. In 1914, while docked in Maryland with the James Adam Floating Theatre, he met Agnes Tawes, the woman he would marry just two-weeks later in Salisbury, Maryland. He continued his musical career, playing the organ and piano for the Carolina Theatre, Palace Theatre, Hunt’s Casino Theatre and New Arcade Theatre. In 1944, Heaton and his wife opened Heaton’s Karmel Korn, a popcorn stand on the Ocean City Boardwalk. Heaton died of a heart attack in 1952, at the age of 61.
William Middleton collection

The William Middleton collection documents the financial records of Joshua Hamblin located in Worcester County, Maryland, and ephemera from Wicomico and Worcester counties, Maryland. The materials date from 1821-1999 with the bulk of the material dating from 1830-1869 and document the financial records of Joshua Hamblin which include receipts, court records, and land records. The materials from Joshua Hamblin came from William Middleton’s grandmother Margaret M. Middleton, who is the granddaughter of Joshua Hamblin. Wicomico and Worcester County ephemera is documented by tourism brochures and menus from local restaurants.
Worcester County Court records

Worcester County Court records consist of records of the Register of Wills, the Orphans’ Court, the Circuit Court, and the Department of Public Works of Worcester County, Maryland from 1823-1991. The bulk of collection is related to the settlement of estates from 1825-1919. These estate vouchers, or debts owed by and to the deceased, include those not only of white farmers, merchants and attorneys, but also of Robert Henry, an African American ship captain, and of Wong Bong, a Chinese laborer. Among Henry’s estate vouchers is a receipt from 1905 for repairs to the schooner BEERSHEBA, while among Bong’s estate vouchers is an example of Chinese calligraphy from 1914. The collection includes papers of Thomas D. Purnell, a Register of Wills, from 1890-1897, and of William Kerbin, an attorney, from 1921-1930. It also includes circuit court records of the dissolution of a business partnership between Calvine Howerton and William Duncan from 1916-1931, and records of the Department of Public Works from 1948-1991. The collection offers insight not only into Worcester County’s legal proceedings, but also into the diversity of the county’s population and into two centuries of the county’s economic development and growth.

The Worcester County Soil Conservation Services Collection primarily contains photographs, slides, and negatives depicting conservation activities in Worcester County, Maryland (as well as Somerset and Wicomico Counties) between the 1940s and 1990s. These photographs were taken by both the United States Department of Agriculture and the Maryland Department of Agriculture and nearly every image contains detailed descriptive information. Also included are tax ditch plans and specifications that date between 1934 and 1990 and educational resources (such as slide series and VHS tapes) that date between the 1980s and 1990s.

The Worcester Environmental Trust (WET) records reflect a movement to preserve the ecology of the Delmarva Peninsula. Joseph and Ilia Fehrer spearheaded activism in Worcester County, Md. from 1972 until 2002, but were also instrumental in petitioning and lobbying for numerous environmental causes along the Eastern Shore and Chesapeake Bay. The Worcester Environmental Trust records range from 1959 to 2004, and contain executive, financial, and legal records that demonstrate this once effective environmental non-profit organization.
